Butternut (Juglans cinerea) Color: Warm buttery tan. Characteristics: Often considered the "poor Mans Walnut" because of it's great price in comparison to Walnut. It is relatively soft and weak with a rather coarse texture, but the wood polishes to a high luster. Properties: it is easy to work with; machines, turns and sands well. Uses: Manufactured into furniture, cabinets, paneling and millwork. Our early American ancestors wore "Butternut jeans" dyed in the juice of Butternut husks.
