White Oak (Quercus alba) Color: From light brown with a greyish tinge in the heartwood to shades of ochre in the sapwood. Characteristics: One of the heaviest, strongest and hardest woods in the Hardwood family. The pores are andular and very numerous and filled with a glistening substance called tyloses. Properties: Turns, carves and bands well. Sanding and finishing qualities and stability excellent. Uses: Due to White oak's pores this wood is especially suitable for water-tight containers (barrel staves) and where water-resistance is required, thus it is used with great success for wet cooperage and ship timbers. It also makes attractive paneling, flooring, furniture and mill work.
