Soft Maple (Acer rubrum)

Color: The heartwood color varies greatly from pale tan to reddish gray, sometimes streaked. Sapwood is white to off-white. Characteristics: Medium density, hardness and strength.

Properties: Machines and finishes well; good stability. Fine texture, close grained; wood does not require filling.

Uses: Often used as an alternate for Hard Maple, it is a softer texture and less figured wood. Due to its white to pinkish-brown color, Soft Maple takes an attractive finish and is used in less expensive furniture and general woodwork. The furniture industry uses large quantities of Soft Maple. Lower grades of Soft Maple are often used for crates, boxes and other shipping containers.
